OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic, condemns the attacks on the editorial offices of Turkish newspaper Zaman in Paris and Cologne

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the media, Dunja Mijatovic, today stated her condemnation of the attacks against the Turkish editorial staff of the newspaper ZAMAN in Paris and Cologne, and called for a thorough investigation into the incidents, the OSCE reported.

"The attacks on the newspaper Zaman not only cause fear among the staff of the publication, but the also bring harm to media freedom and violate freedom of speech" Mijatovic said.

On February 15, masked gunmen (presumed to be supporters of the Kurdistan Workers' Party - the PKK) broke into the editorial office of the newspaper «Zaman» in Paris and began to threaten the staff of the publication. On the same day a bomb was thrown into the editorial office of the newspaper «Zaman» in Cologne.

"Intimidation and attacks on editorial staff and journalists are unacceptable. I hope that the perpetrators will soon be brought to court" Dunja Mijatovic said.
