Dagestan will form its first national park in 2018, to be called Samursky, RIA Dagestan cites Hajibek Jamirzoyev, Deputy Director for science of the Natural Reserve of Dagestansky, as saying
He said that the government order N2322 of December 22, 2011, passed the Concept for Development of Protected Natural Territories of federal value until 2020.
Formation of the national park was a topical issue in the 1970s. A project on organization of natural reserved of the RSFSR was in force until 1990. Dagestan joined the project in 1986 and formed the Dagestansky Natural Reserve in 1987, with the Samursky area as part of it. The Dagestani Council of Ministers initiated formation of the natural part on September 24, 1991.
The Samur delta is a unique natural complex. It has over a thousand of plant types, including 30 tertiary relicts. There are about 450 species vertebrate and tens of thousands of invertebrate animals. There are 70 types of trees and 15 lianas. Over 100 plants and animals are on the list of endangered species. The Samur delta is considered a key ornithological territory by the Russian Union of Bird Watchers.
