The foreign ministers of 27 EU countries approved the decision to grant Serbia the candidate status for the EU membership, RIA Novosti reports referring to the statement by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of France, Alain Juppe.
Last Friday at the talks in Brussels, Serbia and Kosovo reached an agreement on regional cooperation and joint control at checkpoints.
In October 2011 the European Commission suggested to give Belgrade the status of official candidate to the EU. However, at the December EU summit this decision was not adopted. Brussels has repeatedly stated that the start of negotiations on accession of Serbia to the EU will depend on the progress of resolving the situation around Pristina.
