The District Court of Lermontov of the Stavropol Territory has cancelled the elections to the city council set for March 4, Gazeta.ru cites a protester Victor Kapustin as saying.
Alexander Khloponin, Plenipotentiary Presidential Envoy to the North Caucasian Federal District, and head of Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin’s electoral headquarters Stanislav Govorukhin convinced hunger strikers to stop the protests. Valery Belousov said that they were confident in the court’s right decision. The final end to the issue was put at 10 am.
Candidates for the city council organized a hunger strike on February 21 after being banned from elections. They moved to the former office of the pension fund. They demanded municipal elections of the city council to be nullified, territorial electoral commission to be dismissed and its chairman punished.
