Constantine Kosachyov, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Affairs, appointed as head of the Federal Agency for the CIS, Compatriots Living Abroad and International Humanitarian Cooperation (Rossotrudnichestvo) has called John McCain’s statements on Syria inappropriate, United Russia reports.
McCain said that the US should bomb Syrian forces in his statement on March 6. The US senator said that safe areas should be formed in the northern parts of Syria, where Bashar Al-Assad’s regime is weaker. Kosachyov said that such statements are provocative and such initiatives would be a violation of the UN Security Council’s rules.
Resolution proposed on Syria, vetoed by Russia and China, allowed no use of force against Syria. McCain’s idea violates the international law and positions of the international society, including the US and other world leaders, Kosachyov says.
The Russian official pointed out that politicians such as McCain are common in any state and expressed hope that their ideas will be neglected by rational US politicians.
