Vice-Speaker of the Georgian parliament Mikheil Machavariani became general secretary of the ruling party "United National Movement", Trend reports. The party was formerly headed by Zurab Melikishvili. This decision was taken at a meeting of the Political Council of "National Movement."
Machavariani is considered to be a strong player in the election and pre-election periods. In the autumn of this year, the UNM is expected to have a difficult struggle in the parliamentary elections in Georgia. The main rival of the ruling party is the opposition coalition of the billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili, "Georgian Dream".
