Syrian president 'in control of situation'

US intelligences services said on Friday that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is in control of the situation in the country. There is no information on his supporters’ changing sides, despite encouragement from US President Barack Obama and his allies.

US officials say that the Syrian army may only be destroyed by mass foreign intervention. They noted that al-Assad’s tactic is more aggressive. Recent satellite images show damage caused to Homs’ schools, mosques and other buildings after a week of bombing.

Syria has 330,000 troops, Iranian drones, anti-missile defenses. Thus, the US would have problems enforcing a no-fly zone. The Syrian army was formed to oppose Israel, a US anonymous intelligence officer says.
