Russia to ratify WTO membership by June

The Russian parliament will ratify the WTO membership agreement in May-June, as stated by Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Economic Policy Igor Rudensky at a meeting with Russian Minister for Economic Development Elvira Nabiulina, RIA Novosti reports.

Rudensky said that they discussed improvement of the investment climate, agriculture, land, taxes, stimulation of modernization, improvement of industry and support for business.

Maksim Medvedkov, Director of the Department for Trade Negotiations of the Russian Ministry for Economic Development and head of the Russian delegation to the WTO, said that the government is to resolve measures for support of economic sector to meet the WTO terms.

The official WTO membership protocol was signed in December 2011. Russia has been striving to join the organization since 1993.

The WTO was formed to liberalize trade between states. Acceptance of members usually takes 5-7 years, but took 18 for Russia.
