France wants council of Schengen Area

French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe believes that the Schengen Area needs a council of state leaders and a president, RIA Novosti reports.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy urged reformation of the Schengen Treaty and warned that France may cancel membership, unless it undergoes major adjustments.

Juppe said that the Schengen Treaty is 17 years old and the Schengen Area control is unsatisfactory. He added that the Greek-Turkish border has very poor control.

The French official demanded improvement of the work of Frontex (European Agency for the Management of Operational Cooperation at the External Borders of the Member States of the European Union). He expressed support for President Sarkozy’s halting France’s part in the treaty.
