EU blacklists Syrian president’s wife

The EU has frozen the bank accounts of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s wife and his relatives. People blacklisted by the EU are banned from visiting its member states, Gazeta.ru reports.

EU foreign ministers will meet in Brussels on Friday to decide whether to blacklist the president’s wife Asme Assad. Syrian officials have underwent 11 sanctions. The Syrian president and his wife may still visit the UK, because they have its citizenship.

EU functionaries are aware of intense online purchases of jewelry, furniture and other luxurious items by Asme Assad online. An opposition member naming himself Favaz said that she stole people’s money and wastes it in the Internet.

Asme Assad was born in the UK in a family of Syrian migrants. She graduated at the Royal College of the London University and worked at a bank. She married in 2000 and quit her job.
