UN special envoy to Syria and the Arab League, Kofi Annan, has arrived in Moscow at the invitation of Russian side, ITAR-TASS reported. The UN's special envoy landed at Domodedovo airport. Kofi Annan will be received by the President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev. In addition, a meeting is scheduled with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed the importance of upcoming contacts with Kofi Annan. "Russia from the very beginning supported his appointment to this position, given his political experience, including as a former UN Secretary-General, which has gained him a high reputation in the settlement of a series of regional crises," the ministry noted.
"The meeting with Kofi Annan will focus on analysis of ways of finding a peaceful settlement of the conflict inside Syria," the Russian Foreign Ministry underlines, " This is where the main objective of the mission's special envoy lies."
