US praises Azerbaijani economy

The US-Azerbaijani intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation has started work, US Deputy Secretary for Economic Development, Energy and Ecology Robert D. Hormats said at the subcommittee for Europe of the committee for foreign affairs of the US House of Representatives on Wednesday, Trend reports.


The commission will soon meet in Washington. It will be co-chaired by Azerbaijani Finances Minister Samir Sharifov.


Hormats believes that Azerbaijani economy is one of the most advanced in the post-Soviet space. It tripled since 2004. The World Bank said that poverty dropped from 49% in 2003 to 9% in 2010. Azerbaijan imported goods worth $328 million from the US in 2011, compared with $253 million (+30%) in 2010.


The Azerbaijani government set priorities on agriculture, information and communication technologies, transport and tourism.
