Annan's Syria mission may succeed - Vladimir Yevseyev

Baghdad has concluded the Arab League summit. Syria was urged to stop violence, although there were no calls for the resignation of President Bashar al-Assad or foreign intervention.

Arab League Secretary General Nabil al-Arabi said that Syrian people should determine their future themselves. The Baghdad declaration calls demands for democracy justified. Arab leaders expressed support for the mission of Kofi Annan, special representative of the UN and the Arab League, to resolve the conflict.

Vladimir Yevseyev, Director of the Russian Center for Socio-Political Studies, told Vestnik Kavkaza that chances of Annan's success are unclear. Protests such as the ones in Homs and Idlib cannot be resolved without use of forces. The situation will depend on stability in Syria.

The expert believes in success of Annan, but reminds that Qatar and Saudi Arabia have different positions, Syria opposes Saudi Arabia in Lebanon. Syria planned parliamentary polls on May 7. MPs requested the elections to be postponed. The US position smoothened. A lot depends on Turkey's attitude.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said today that Turkey will interfere in Syrian affairs inevitably.
Lebanon continues supplying Syrian opposition with weapons. Turkey enters about 100 km deep into Iraq's Kurdistan when chasing militants.
