New Abkhaz parliament to hold first meeting on Tuesday

The first meeting of the newly elected National Assembly - the Parliament of Abkhazia - will be held on April 3. The corresponding decree was signed by the President of the Republic, Alexander Ankvab, Interfax reports.

At the first meeting the deputies will elect a new speaker, the press service of the Parliament reports.
In total there are 35 seats in Parliament. In the first round of March 10, thirteen deputies were elected, and during the re-election on March 24 - twenty deputies. In two districts, new elections will be held in May.

In total the 35 seats were fought by 148 candidates.

The meeting will be held in the meeting room of the Cabinet of Ministers, according to Department of Information under the President of Abkhazia.

A day before, the Supreme Court of Abkhazia decided that in the 21st election district of the Sukhumi region of Abkhazia, a re-election will be conducted, ITAR-TASS reports. The Supreme Court of Abkhazia adopted such a decision having considered the claims received from the Central Electoral Commission and a candidate for this constituency Valery Kvarchii.

At two public meetings held on March 27 and 29 the Supreme Court declared the elections in the 21st Congressional District of Sukhumi region invalid.

The Central Electoral Commission will appoint the date of the re-election within two weeks, while the District Election Commission will organize new elections in the disputed area.

On the same day the President of Abkhazia, Alexander Ankvab, thanked the deputies of the Parliament of the fourth convocation who were completing their work. In his message, the leader of Abkhazia said that over the past five years the deputies of the Abkhazian Parliament made a great contribution to the development and establishment of the legal system.

During this period, the message says, a large number of laws and codified acts necessary for the state and society have been adopted, which led to filling existing gaps in legislation.

"I should note the constructive interaction between the executive and legislative branches of the government. No question important for the country and for the people of the Republic of Abkhazia has been ever resolved without the participation of the National Assembly. Difficult and painstaking preparatory work has been carried out by specialized parliamentary committees. The Presidential Administration and the Office of the People's Assembly also to interacted closely and productively interact," Alexander Ankvab notes in his message.

Members of Parliament at the last meeting approved the report on the state budget of Abkhazia for 2011, as well as reports on using the budgets of six extra-budgetary funds of the Republic.

As the Prime Minister of Abkhazia Leonid Lakerbaya notes, "there has always been a business atmosphere between the Parliament and the government."  Lakerbaya congratulated those who have been newly elected to parliament, the State News Agency of Abkhazia reports.
