Georgian citizen avoids death sentence in Malaysia

Georgian citizen Babutsa Gorgadze was detained in Malaysia for transport and trafficking of narcotics and sentenced to 8 years in prison on Tuesday, instead of being sentenced to death, News Georgia reports.

Gorgadze was detained at the Kuala Lumpur Airport in October 2010. Irakly Chilingarashvili, head of the legal support section of the main directorate of Georgian prosecution office, announced the court’s sentence.

Darejan Kokhtashvili, another Georgian citizen was detained after questioning of Gorgadze at a hotel on March 30. She was sentenced to 6 years of prison.

Eldar Davitiani, husband of Babutsa, was sentenced to 15 years of prison by the Tbilisi City Court in late February. He gave up to the police and admitted guilt.
