Shoygu becomes Governor of Moscow Region

The regional legislatives of Moscow have appointed Sergey Shoygu as Governor of Moscow Region today. He received 46 votes, RIA Novosti reports.

Igor Bryntsalov, Speaker of the regional parliament of Moscow, said that the region has one of the most complex economies in the country. He emphasized that the governor will have old priorities, such as the social sphere, improvement of standards of living, housing and utilities and transport infrastructure.

Boris Gromov, head of the Moscow regional government, announced his resignation plans on March 23. He wanted to leave office in May 2012, when his term expires. Gromov believes that 12 years of governing are enough.

United Russia proposed three candidates for the position on March 30. They are Igor Parkhomenko, Gromov’s first deputy, Reutov Mayor Alexander Khodyrev and Minister for Emergencies Sergey Shoygu.

Shoygu promised to focus on resolving the problems of defrauded real estate investors and lack of kindergartens.

Gromov expects to become a member of the Federation Council after his resignation.
