Russian Defense Ministry denies resignation of minister and chief of staff

Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov has requested the government to keep him in office, RIA Novosti reports.

The Defense Ministry commented that reports on the minister’s resignation are false.

RBC Daily said that Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov requested a new position after the inauguration of President Vladimir Putin.

The most likely candidates for the position are Vice Premier for Defense Dmitry Rogozin and Commander-in-Chief of Ground Troops Alexander Postnikov. The parliament and the Kremlin have not commented on the issue yet.

According to RBC, Serdyukov will resign together with General Staff Chief Nikolai Makarov.
