The Georgian People’s Commission has started talks on constitutional amendments initiated by the Christian Democrats, Trend cites Pavle Kublashvili, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for Legal Affairs, as saying.
The Christian Democrats demanded amendments to the 49th article of the Georgian Constitution, giving the right for an EU citizen born and living in Georgia for 10 years to be elected as an MP. The idea is to allow Georgian billionaire Bidzina Ivanishvili to take part in parliamentary polls this autumn.
He did not receive approval for naturalization, because he is a French citizen.
The People’s Commission was formed a few weeks ago due to constitutional amendments allowing people aged 21 to take part in parliamentary polls. Kublashvili said that the Christian Democrats will conclude work on their idea by May.
