CSTO to cooperate with NATO

 

The council of CSTO foreign ministers has decided to start cooperation with NATO, Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kasykhanov said, RIA Novosti reports.

The minister stated that the council discussed improvement of collective support measures and solidarity in cases of security threats or political and economic pressure. Attention was paid to the Afghan problem and handing power to its local authorities, the Tajik-Afghan border enforcement, organization of ISAF cargo transit from Afghanistan.

Kazykhanov said that they also talked on tensions in the Middle East and North Africa.

The CSTO consists of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov noted the need for cooperation of the CSTO and NATO earlier.
