The US is ready to give Russia official guarantees that the missile systems would not be used against it, as stated by Ellen Tauscher, US special representative for strategic stability and missile defenses, RIA Novosti reports.
The US will also assist in convincing NATO to give Russia such guarantees. Tauscher reminded that the US does not want limitations to missile defenses. Russia will now be convinced that missiles in Europe would not be used against it.
Russia and NATO held a summit in Lisbon in November 2010. The sides agreed to cooperate in forming the European missile shield. But they have not reached common grounds on the architecture of the missile system. The US refused to give the guarantees. As a result, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced a list of complex military and diplomatic measures in late November 2011 to build own missile shield in Europe.
