Mehriban Aliyeva, President of the Heydar Aliyev Fund, has received the Commonwealth Star at the House of Pashkov. People from 7 CIS states received the award, which is given for humanitarian activities, science and education, literature and art.
Russian Speaker of Parliament Sergey Naryshkin opened the ceremony.
Mehriban Aliyeva thanked the State Council and the Fund for State Cooperation of the CIS for the award. She noted such positive tendencies of relations as good neighbourliness and cooperation. Aliyeva noted that Azerbaijan is the center of Eurasia and has numerous cultures and civilizations.
The state is always open for humanitarian cooperation. Azerbaijan’s capital Baku is a center for intercultural dialogue and holds annual international conferences and forums. It held the joint Russian-Azerbaijani humanitarian forum last year.
Kyrgyz Minister for Culture and Tourism Ibragim Junusov received the Commonwealth Star for humanitarian achievements. Russian cardio surgeon and head of the Science Center for Cardio-Vascular Surgery of Baku, Leo Bokeria, received it as well.
Bokeria was born in Ochamchir in the Abkhaz SSR of the Georgian SSR on December 22, 1939. He graduated from the MMI of I.M. Sechenov and concluded post-graduate studies there in 1968.
He joined the RAMS in 1994 and the RAS for physiology and fundamental medicine in 2011.
Mehriban Aliyeva is a Goodwill Ambassador of UNESCO and ISESCO. She is well-known for charity activities in Azerbaijan and beyond. Aliyeva supervised the Heydar Aliyev Fund and contributes to the development of education, science, culture, ecology, sports, religion and other spheres. She supports construction of clinics and schools, restoration of mosques and religious monuments of other confessions, restoration of cultural traditions, modern art and the promotion of cultural heritage.
