Northern Cyprus may change name

 

Ankara has set a deadline for the European Union to resolve the Cyprus problem by July 1, when Cyprus starts chairing the EU, 1news reports.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus will be renamed to the Turkish Republic of Cyprus, unless the issue will be resolved. The new name is expected to gain support of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC). The Northern Cyprus joined the organization in 2004, recognized by 57 states.

A high-ranking anonymous official told Milliyet that the Turkish community of the Cyprus is doing its best to resolve the dispute. Turkey will end its cooperation with the EU after July 1.

The EU demands the two republics of the Cyprus to unite and become a confederation of Turks and Greeks. Ankara approved the idea according principles proposed by Annan in his plan. According to referendum showed that 60% of the Turkish part of the island approves formation of a single state. But the Greek part rejected establishment of a confederation.
