Iran threatens to use force in Abu Musa Island dispute

If diplomacy fails to resolve the Abu Musa Island dispute, Iran will have to use force, Brigadier General Ahmad-Reza Pourdastan, Commander of Iranian Ground Forces, said at a meeting with a foreign attaché in Tehran, Trend reports.

The Cooperation Council of the Arab States of the Gulf condemned Iran for its attitude towards the dispute on Wednesday, calling it a violation of sovereignty of the United Arab Emirates.

The UAE called their ambassador off to Abu Dhabi to discuss Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s visit to Abu Musa.

UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan warned on Monday that the unresolved dispute threatens peace and stability.

Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that Iran will respond with force to any threats to its territorial unity.
