US says Russia should not be condemned for Assad support

The US sees no reasons for accusing Russia of supporting Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta said, RIA Novosti reports.

Panetta said at the US Congress on Thursday that Russia supports the plan developed by Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and LAS. The secretary reminded that Russia made deals on shipments of arms to Syria long ago. Russia has a long history of providing Syria with military and economic support.

A US congressman reminded that Russia and China vetoed the UN resolution on Syria. Panetta responded that the two states approved Annan’s plan. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Martin Dempsey agreed with Panetta, adding that the US needs to cooperate with Russia in resolving the Syrian crisis.
