Kazakhstan wants delimitation of Caspian Sea

Kazakh Foreign Minister Yerzhan Kasykhanov has expressed hope that the Caspian Sea will have its legal status set in the near future, News Kazakhstan reports.

The minister said at the government hour on Monday that it remains an essential issue. Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev proposed formation of territorial zones, fishing zones and common zones of the Caspian Sea.Five Caspian states have approved the idea, Kazykhanov says.

Kazakhstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkmenistan have been discussing status of the Caspian Sea for over 10 years.

Kazakhstan wants to use the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea signed in 1982. Kazakhstan wants formation of a territorial sea, fishing zones and common water zones.
