Putin resigns as leader of United Russia and offers post to Medvedev

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced plans to resign as leader of the United Russia Party and proposed holding an assembly in the second half of May to elect its new leader. He recommended President Dmitry Medvedev to take the position, RIA Novosti reports.

The Constitution forbids a president to be a member of any party, because a president is a consolidating figure for all political forces and citizens in the country. Putin said that he will resign on the inauguration day of May 7.
