Beijing hosts meeting of defence ministers of SCO member states

 



Beijing on Tuesday hosted a regular meeting of defence ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) member states, which was attended by Kazakh Defence Minister Adilbek Dzhaksybekov, Trend reports.
The defence ministers of the SCO member states covered a broad range of issues in an open and friendly atmosphere and noted the progress in implementing the Plan of Cooperation of the SCO defence ministries for 2012-2013, which was adopted in 2011 in Astana.
The defence ministers paid particular attention to issues of security, peace and stability in the organization's space, which are crucial for the countries of the region. There were constructive ideas to further enhance the role of the SCO, including in international efforts for nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, combating terrorism, separatism and extremism.

In his speech, Dzhaksybekov stressed that Kazakhstan attaches great importance to cooperation within the SCO framework and believes that the organization has great prospects, and the country is committed to develop cooperation in military matters on areas of mutual interest.

"Kazakhstan, in accordance with the Military Doctrine adopted last October, intends to deepen the strategic partnership in the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization on the basis of common political-military interests," he said.

Following the meeting a joint communique was adopted and the idea of joint exercises "Peace Mission 2012", which will be held on June 8 - 14 in Tajikistan, was confirmed.
