State Duma aproves new law on governor elections

The State Duma, the lower chamber of the Russian Parliament, aproved on Tuesday the new law on governor elections proposed by President Dmitry Medvedev, RIA Novosti reports.

The law restores elections for governors by popular vote in Russia, although the president will have the power to disapprove candidates nominated by political parties.
The bill was criticized bitterly by the opposition. Opposition activists said that the law wouldn't stop the Kremlin's intervention into regional affairs.

The bill was supported by deputies from the pro-Kremlin United Russia party and the far-right LDPR party. Deputies from the Communist party and the socialist Just Russia party rejected the bill.
