Spokeswoman of the US State Department Victoria Nuland said that the US may refer to article 7 of the UN Charter, unless the situation in Syria settles.
The UN Security Council sent 300 observers, including 4 Russians, to Syria on April 21. Their mission will last 90 days. The conflict in Syria has resulted in 9,000 people killed.
The observers will monitor the cease-fire regime and fulfillment of the plan proposed by Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and LAS. The first monitoring group arrived in mid-April.
Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, accused the Syrian government of violating the cease-fire regime set on April 12. Ashton said in Brussels on Friday that cease-fire is violated despite the monitoring mission’s presence, Interfax reports.
The conflict in Syria has been ongoing for over a year. The UN says that about 9,000 people have died. The Syrian government says that over 2,500 law enforcers have died in clashes with well-armed militants.
