Russia and Azerbaijan resolve issue of border villages

Azerbaijan and Russia have fully resolved the issue concerning Russian citizens in the villages of Khrakh-Uba and Uryan-Uba in the Khachmaz region of Azerbaijan, the Russian Embassy in Azerbaijan announced.

Residents of the Azerbaijani village of Uryan-Uba were granted Azerbaijani citizenship and remain in their homes, while Russian citizens from the village of Khrakh-Uba decided to move to Dagestan, RIA Novosti reports.

According to the decision of the USSR government, from 1954 the population of small areas of the Dagestani and Azerbaijani republics were temporarily resettled for agricultural purposes. As a result, permanenent herding camps appeared on the territory of Azerbaijan – the villages of Khrakh-Uba and Uryan-Uba. The situation aggravated with the collapse of the Soviet Union.
