Azerbaijan has taken US chairmanship in the UN Security Council today. The US has been chairing the council since April. Azerbaijan will pass chairmanship to China in a month. Azerbaijan, Guatemala, Morocco, Pakistan and Togo were bidding for temporary membership in the UN Security Council in October 2011. Azerbaijan was elected on January 1, 2012.
Agshin Mekhtiyev, Azerbaijani representative to the UN Security Council, told ITAR-TASS that Azerbaijan preserves its priorities of foreign policy. Discussions of agenda for the upcoming 31 days will be held at the very beginning of May, with 15 states attending.
The ambassador emphasized that some of the topics introduced by Azerbaijan are global peace and security, terrorism, situation in the Balkans, Middle East and North Africa, Palestinian problem and the situation in Syria.
Azerbaijan is a member of the Organization for Islamic Cooperation and the Non-Aligned Movement. Azerbaijan will not give its principles up.
