Avakyants becomes Commander of Russia’s Pacific Fleet

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has appointed Sergey Avakyants as Commander of the Pacific Fleet, RIA Novosti reports.

Avakyants was the deputy head of the fleet’s headquarters.

Sergey Avakyants was born in 1957. He graduated at the Black Sea Supreme Naval School of Nakhimov, the Naval Academy of Fleet Admiral of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov and the Military Academy of the General Staff. He has been serving at the Pacific Fleet since 2007.

The Pacific Fleet has missile cruisers, multi-purpose submarines, aviation, ground forces and coastal forces.

Medvedev dismissed General-Colonel Alexander Zelin, Commander of the Air Forces of Russia, last week. Zelin will now be an advisor of Russian defense minister for Air Forces.

General-Colonel Vladimir Chirkin who commander the Central Military District became the Commander of the Ground Forces, who commander the Central Military District. General-Colonel Alexander Postnikov-Streltsov, Commander of the Ground Forces, became the Deputy Chief of General Staff.
