Special UN meeting in New York

New York has hosted a special meeting on behalf of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and Azerbaijan, the state chairing the UN Security Council, AzerTAG reports.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev attended the meeting. Ban Ki-moon wished Azerbaijan success in chairing the Security Council.

Aliyev discussed international cooperation in combating terrorism at the UN Security Council. Ministers, counter-terrorism authorities, Special Russian Presidential Envoy for Terrorism and Transnational Organized Crime Alexander Zmeyevsky attended, ITAR-TASS reports.

Ban Ki-moon pointed out the terrorism problem in the Sahel Region, linked with the Libyan problem. He called for the need for an integrated approach to combatting terrorism and extremism, as set out in the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy. The secretary general requested the appointment of a special UN coordinator for terrorism.
