Russia to seek firm guarantees from the U.S. on missile defense

Russian President Vladimir Putin instructed the Russian Foreign Ministry and the other federal executive bodies to ensure consistent implementation of the US-Russian START treaty and to receive the firm guarantees that the U.S. missile defense system is not directed against the Russian nuclear deterrent, the Kremlin press service said on Monday.

"To presume that the negotiations on further reductions of strategic offensive weapons are only possible in the context of accounting for all the factors influencing the global strategic stability. To consistently defend the Russian approaches in connection with the creation of the US global missile defense system, seeking for firm guarantees that it is not directed against the Russian nuclear deterrent," says the presidential decree about the foreign policy of the Russian Federation.
