Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili plans to turn Mestia into a major tourism center, Business Georgia reports.
The small village has a skiing route and is on the springhead of rivers Mestiachala and Mulakhura. Mestia is the administrative center of Svanetia in Georgia, merging about 10 neighbor areas together.
A hotel in Mestia will open in August 2012. There will be 3 hotels. The place has numerous historic sites, including old churches, museums and others structures. Its medieval churches are on the UNESCO heritage list.
It also has an airport. Tourists arrive from Germany, Israel, Poland, Denmark and UK. Flights are carried out 5 times a week. Summer flights are daily.
