Assad’s party gets 73% of parliamentary seats

The National Unity Bloc of Syria has got 183 out of 250 seats of parliament, ITAR-TASS reports.

The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party and its allies of the National Progressive Front lost influence. Fayez as-Sayeg, a notable political analyst and public figure in Syria, said that Ba’ath lost its ruling status, but keeps support of the population. Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is the party’s Secretary General.

Independent MPs got 49 seats of parliament. The only opposition fraction got 5 seats.

Quotas for workers and farmers remain at the National Council. According to the Constitution, 127 MPs need to be workers. Chairman lf the Electoral Commission Halaf al-Azzaui said that 30 women were elected, which is a demonstration of democracy in Syria.
