NATO completes first stage of European missile shield

NATO has concluded the first stage of developing its European missile defenses, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said. He announced formation of the missile defenses in Lisbon 18 months ago, RIA Novosti reports.

Army General Nikolai Makarov, Chief of General Staff, expressed concerns over intermediate readiness of European missile defenses in May. Russia may use its forces and means to destroy missile defenses of other states.

Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate in forming European missile defenses in Lisbon in 2010. The US refuses to give legal guaranties that the system will not be used against Russia. Nonetheless, Russia is welcome to cooperate.

Poland may become a major opponent in cooperation with Russia. Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said that Warsaw does not want a common missile system with Russia in Europe, ITAR-TASS reports.

Another topic discussed by NATO and Russia in Chicago is the Syrian problem. Rasmussen said that NATO does not want to interfere in Syria the way it did in Libya.
