Acting Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliyev said that the police prevented terrorist attacks planned for May holidays, RIA Novosti reports.

Nurgaliyev said that the number of crimes has dropped by over 20% in the first 4 months of 2012, compared to the same period in 2011, from 118 to 93.

139 militants, including 16 of their leaders, were killed in January-April 2012. 161 were detained. The police found 99 caches with weapons: 26 grenade launchers, 681 guns, over 1,500 explosive shots. About 30 kg of explosives were found and 93 improvised bombs defused.

The number of grave crimes drops in Chechnya, although the local crime level is still one of the lowest in the North Caucasian Federal District.
