The Syrian authorities will be able to find a way out of the situation
in the country without outside interference, Deputy Prime Minister,
Chairman of the Russian part of the permanent Russian-Syrian
commission on cooperation in the field of trade, economy, science and
technologies, Alexander Khloponin said, RIA Novosti reports.
At the 8th meeting of the permanent Russian-Syrian commission,
Khloponin stressed that Russia has consistently and strongly
supported the Syrians in their desire to regulate the conflict on their
own and based on the course of reforms proclaimed by the leadership of
Syria.
In April, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Russia was
concerned about the attempts to "privatize" Kofi Annan's plan and
give the functions of the evaluation of its implementation to
structures such as the self-proclaimed "Friends of Syria". According
to Lavrov, only the UN Security Council has the authority to assess
the progress of the plan based on reports of the UN Observer Mission.
Alexander Khloponin said that the Russian side will continue to render
Syria all necessary assistance in settling the crisis.
As previously reported by VK, Russia decided not to participate in the
meeting in Abu Dhabi of the "Friends of Syria" group on economic recovery and
development in Syria, due to the fact that the government of Syria was not present there.
At the present time the plan of the UN Special Representative of the
League of Arab States Kofi Annan is being implemented in
Syria. The plan provides for a ceasefire and international observers who are
working already in six Syrian cities.
Last week, EU foreign ministers approved a 15th package of sanctions against Syria at a meeting in Brussels. The
sanctions provide for freezing the assets of certain European citizens
and companies who are suspected of financing the regime of President Assad.
