Chechen leader 'should not have limited terms of office' - speaker

Chechen Speaker of Parliament Dukuvakha Abdurakhmanov believes that a Chechen leader should not have a limited number of terms office, RIA Novosti reports.

The Russian law on direct governor elections comes into force on June 1. It does not allow region heads to stay in office for over two terms.

Abdurakhmanov requested Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko and Speaker of Russian Parliament Sergey Naryshkin to reconsider the norm.

Matviyenko noted that regions have the right for own laws on governmental elections. She agrees with the point of Abdurakhmanov. The primary rule is that governors are elected by the local population. Other points will be regulated by regional laws.
