If the forthcoming round of talks in Moscow between Iran and the six
international mediators does not lead to significant shifts, the US
government will continue to increase pressure on Iran, deputy US
Treasury Secretary David Cohen said in an interview with Israeli
newspaper "Haaretz" during his visit to Israel.
The official added that the US and Israel are "closely cooperating on
sanctions" that are useful. "We will continue to consult with Israel," Cohen said.
At the same time, during the talks in Israel Cohen stressed the fact
that the United States will slow down any Israeli plans for a
preemptive strike on Iranian nuclear facilities, Interfax reports.
The talks between the six and Iran in Moscow are scheduled for June 18-19.
The West is concerned that further development of the uranium program
may lead to the creation of nuclear weapons by Iran. Iran insists that
its nuclear research is for peaceful purposes.
