Euro-2 standard implemented in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijani State Committee for Standards, Metrology and Patents (SCSMP) accepted the Euro-2 ecological standard for fuels yesterday. This regards the limitations for toxic emissions from vehicles into the atmosphere in Azerbaijan.

The order corresponds to the government's decision of March 6th 2010, according to which the exhaust fumes produced by vehicles into the air will meet European standards from July 1st 2010.

"The new standard will allow for a decrease in dangerous emissions by 20-30%," the Chief of the Technical Standards Department of the SCSMP, Sabig Abdullayev, stated. He said imported cars would be examined at the SCSMP labs. Used cars will be examined separately. The engines will have to meet the new standards. The owners will have the right to submit their cars for new examinations after any errors are corrected.

Regarding the existence of 925,000 cars in Azerbaijan on January 1st 2010, he said the government is being careful about this matter, because it concerns not only ecological, but also social problems. "The government has decided that old vehicles will be examined in accordance with the previous requirements," he said.
