8 Turkish troops killed

A group of Kurdish militants has killed 8 and injured 16 Turkish troops using mortars, grenade launchers and guns, RBC reports.

The incident happened at the Turkish-Iraqi border. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan is on a visit to Mexico. He urged militants to surrender.

The Cabinet was summoned for a special meeting and ordered a special commission of high-ranking military officials to enforce security in the area.

The conflict in the south-eastern part of Turkey escalated in August 2011. Over 30 troops and police officers were killed. Turkish forces attacked militant camps in Iraq as a response.

The Turkish conflict with the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has been ongoing since 1984. The PKK demands independence. The conflict has resulted in the deaths of over 45,000 people. The UN and the European Union recognize the PKK as a terrorist organization.
