Turkmen president emphasizes role of Caspian resource extraction

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov is attending the Rio+20 summit for sustainable development under the auspices of the UN in Brazil, Trend reports on Friday.

The president discussed the ecology of the Caspian Sea of Azerbaijan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Iran and Turkmenistan. The states need to merge economic interests for the sake of preserving the biological diversity of the sea with UN support.

Caspian states need to find common grounds on energy security, with ecology as one of the priorities.

The forum in Rio de Janeiro was organized by the UN General Assembly in 2009, gathering leaders of over 100 states and governments, MPs, businessmen, public figures. Sustainable development and environmental protection are the main topics of the forum.
