Azerbaijan is marking the Day of the Armed Forces. The Azerbaijani Armed Forces were formed by the Azerbaijani Democratic Republic on June 26, 1918.
The Supreme Council of Azerbaijan ordered formation of the Armed Forces on October 9, 1991. The president set June 26 as the Day of the Armed Forces on May 22, 1998. It is a day off.
President Ilham Aliyev noted that the republic was increasing the size of its army. Military expenses total $3.6 billion. The Ministry for Defense Industry was formed in 2005 to establish own military production. 20 factories producing military products have opened in 7 years. Azerbaijan produces 665 types of military products. Military developments are closely connected with the Nagorno-Karabakh peace process.
