The Baku-Tbilisi-Kars Railway will have a capacity of over 17 million tons of cargo and 3 million passengers annually by 2034, Turkish Minister for Economy Zafer Caglayan said, Trend reports.
The railway will start off with 6.5 million tions of cargo and one million passengers. Its construction should end in 2012. Construction of the Georgian section is slower than expected.
60% of construction work has been concluded. The project is worth $500 million. It will revive the Silk Road and contribute to economic, cultural and social development. The project is being realized by Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia. It will help development of Caucasus states and Middle Asia.
