The leaders of the 27 EU countries today approved the decision to
introduce the embargo on importing Iranian oil in the EU countries
from July 1. This was announced today by the head of the European
Council Herman van Rompuy after the Brussels summit.
"The European Council supports the introduction of the oil embargo from
this Sunday," he told journalists, RIA Novosti reports.
According to van Rompuy, the participants of the summit called on the
Iranian authorities to adjust their position in the negotiations with
the "Six" about the Iranian nuclear program.
The EU council for international affairs confirmed the decision
of January 23, 2012 on the introduction of embargo from July 1.
Contracts on oil imports should be cancelled before July 1.
In February, Marlene Holzner, press-secretary of the European
Committee, said that the EU has enough oil resources to survive
without Iranian oil for more than four years.
