Iranian Navy to deploy new fleet of marine vessels

Commander the Iranian Navy Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari has announced that a new fleet of surface and submarine vessels will soon join the Iranian Navy, Press TV reports.

Saying that the naval forces of the Islamic Republic have escorted 1,500 commercial ships and oil tankers in recent years, Admiral Sayyari emphasized in an interview with Fars News Agency on Saturday that Iran has established security and protection for its commercial vessels and oil tankers in international waters.

“Nowadays, sea piracy has turned into terrorism and those that benefit from such [terror] acts are providing support for sea pirates,”  Sayyari said, noting that the establishment of security for Iranian commercial fleets in international waters is among the duties of Iran’s Navy.
