Yerevan hosts conference on modernization of libraries

Experts of about 60 states are attending a conference in Yerevan marking the 500th anniversary of Armenian book-printing and proclamation of Yerevan as the World Book Capital, News Armenia cites Director of the National Library of Armenia Tigran Zargaryan.

13 publishers are attending. Libraries and publishers of Lithuania, Estonia, USA, Netherlands and Slovenia will exchange experience on modernization of libraries.

Armenia still prefers printed books to electronic ones.

Culture Minister Asmik Pogosyan noted that the conference will promote a modern approach to availability of information technologies for libraries.

The idea to host the conference belongs to the National Library, science library of the Armenian National Academy of Sciences, library of the Yerevan State University and the Republican Science and Medical Library and the National Book Chamber. The process started in 2001 under support of the Open Public Institute.

According to March 2012, digitalization of old books was completed at the library of the Academy of Sciences. Libraries of the church and the Institute for Ancient Manuscripts of Matenadaran will be involved in the process later.
