Kofi Annan, special envoy of the UN and LAS, held negotiations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus on Monday. Annan called the negotiations open and constructive, RIA Novosti reports.
Spokesman of the Syrian Foreign Ministry Jihad Makdissi noted the constructive nature of the talks on Twitter. Annan arrived in Damascus on Sunday. He will visit Tehran on Monday to discuss the Syrian problem.
The Syrian president does not consider Annan’s plan a failure. The main obstacle in its realization is political and material support for terrorists, the president said on Sunday.
Saudi Arabia and Qatar are supporting terrorists, al-Assad insists. Turkey provides material and technical assistance, the US provides political support, he goes on.
Al-Assad said that he will not resign.
Michelle Kilo, head of the Syrian opposition delegation to Moscow, hopes that negotiations with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his deputy Mikhail Bogdanov will bring positive results soon, Interfax reports.
He also thanked Russia for its understanding.
